A little help with your files
Get started
On Mac, drop files or folders onto File Sniff, choose Open Files…, or use Finder’s Sniff with File Sniff service. On iPhone and iPad, import files or folders, or send a file to File Sniff from the share sheet.
Select a result to inspect it. Use the mismatches filter to focus on files whose extension differs from their contents.
A file says “Unknown”
The file may use an unsupported format, have too little data to identify, or be damaged. File Sniff reports Unknown when it cannot confidently identify the content.
Fix an extension on Mac
Right-click a mismatched result and choose Fix Extension. Check the proposed name and confirm the change. Use Undo (⌘Z) if you need to reverse it. Changing an extension does not convert or repair the contents of a file.
Open an Outlook message on Mac
For a detected Outlook .msg file, choose Convert to EML from its context menu and choose where to save it. You can then open the .eml file in Apple Mail.
Share your findings
Export results as CSV or JSON. Check exports before sharing: they may include filenames or paths you consider private.
