Privacy, by keeping things local
File Sniff is made by Peth Pty Ltd. This page describes the current pre-release app and this website. Last updated 6 September 2026.
For the full details, including information handling, your rights and contact options, read our privacy policy. This page is the plain-language overview.
Your files stay on your device
File Sniff analyses the files you select on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. It does not upload file contents for analysis or send those contents to Peth Pty Ltd.
Inspection is read-only. The Mac app changes a filename only when you confirm a Fix Extension action. Message conversion and exports write files at your request. When you share an export, the destination you choose handles that data under its own policies.
External checks are your choice
The Mac app can open a VirusTotal report in your browser if you ask it to. That sends the file’s SHA-256 hash, together with normal browser request information, to VirusTotal. The hash can identify a particular file; it is not the file’s contents.
A separate action opens VirusTotal’s upload page and shows the file in Finder. File Sniff does not upload it automatically. If you then submit it on VirusTotal’s website, you are sharing the file with an external service under its policies. Avoid uploading confidential files. Neither action is needed for local analysis.
Exports, cloud-drive synchronisation and files you choose to share are handled by the destination or provider you choose. Read the full explanation of external services.
Local diagnostic information
The Mac app can store Apple MetricKit crash and hang diagnostics inside its own local application container. The current app does not transmit those diagnostic files to Peth Pty Ltd.
This website
This website does not add analytics scripts, advertising trackers or a file-upload endpoint. The homepage demonstration uses built-in examples. The free file checker reads files you explicitly select using your browser’s local file APIs. It does not transmit file contents or filenames, render file contents, or store results in cookies or browser storage. Results remain in the page until you clear them or close it. Saving JSON creates a download on your device; it is not sent to us.
When hosted on Cloudflare Pages, Cloudflare processes network requests needed to deliver the site, which may include IP addresses and request information. Hosting infrastructure is separate from the app’s local file analysis.
Contacting us
When online messaging is enabled, the contact form sends your name (if provided), email address, enquiry type and message to our team by email through Cloudflare. It uses Cloudflare Turnstile for spam protection, which processes browser and network information. Turnstile loads only on the contact page; it does not run in the file checker. Please leave confidential file contents out of your message.
App Store services
Downloading the app and any future purchases through the App Store are handled by Apple under Apple’s privacy policies. The release version’s privacy information will also appear on its App Store listing.
Updates and contact
This page will be updated if the app’s data practices change. See the privacy policy’s contact and complaints section, or visit our contact page.
