How this .msg and .eml viewer works

Saved emails usually arrive in one of two formats:

  • Outlook .msg files (D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1): When someone drags an email out of classic Microsoft Outlook on Windows, Outlook saves a Compound File Binary (OLE2) container holding MAPI property streams (__substg1.0_0037 for the subject, __substg1.0_1000 for the body, and __attach_version1.0_#... sub-storages for each enclosed file). Apple Mail and Quick Look on macOS cannot open .msg files natively.
  • Standard .eml files (RFC 5322 / MIME): Plain-text headers (From, To, Subject, Date) followed by multipart MIME boundaries containing the message text and base64 or quoted-printable encoded attachments.

This tool inspects both formats 100% locally in your browser: it reads the sender, recipients, subject, date, plain-text body preview, and lets you save individual attachments or download all attachments as a ZIP archive without uploading confidential correspondence to any server.

Common questions

Are my .msg or .eml emails uploaded to a server?

No. Your browser parses OLE2 .msg streams and RFC 5322 .eml parts locally in memory on your device. Private emails and attachments never leave your device. See our privacy overview.

Why won’t Apple Mail open an Outlook .msg file on Mac?

Apple Mail natively supports standard RFC 5322 .eml files, whereas Windows Outlook saves dragged-out messages in Microsoft’s proprietary OLE2 Compound File Binary format (.msg). Read how to open .msg files on a Mac.

What if my Outlook attachment is named winmail.dat instead of .msg?

Use the free winmail.dat (TNEF) extractor to unpack attachments from winmail.dat or ATT00001.dat files.
